Case Study on Prezi
This prezi that I have create is about Sherlock Holmes 2:A game of Shadows and The Kings Speech. I have spoken about production, distribution, exhibition use of technology and marketing. I have also then compared my case studies on how the operate differently and the advantages and disadvantages of them.
Section B: Institution and Audience
'Successful media products depend as much upon marketing and distribution to a specific audience as they do upon good production practices.'
I have studied production companies within a contemporary film industry that targets British audiences. These include the independent film production company Bedlam which has limited budget. I have also studied a hollywood company Warners Bros. Which is apart of a conglomerate which is time warners. I blelieve that Bedlam and Warners Bros depend on marketing and distribution to their audience as much as they do on good production practices in order to create a successful film.
American production companies such as Warners Bros tend to think about their audience, marketing and distribution in order to create a good film. They normally do this before and during the film in made, unlike many British production companies who think about marketing and distributing the film to the audience after it has been made. This makes the production of the film easier as they always have the target audience in mind.
In order for films to be successful they need to reach their target audience. Digital technology has helped with this as it has allowed media convergences. It has made it easier to reach the audience thought the use of social media internet and social networking. This is a form of distribution as it is reaching the film to its potential audience. It is very important for production companies to meet the potential audiences needs as they will be more likely to go and see the film. Momentum pictures who are owned by Alliances film distribute the King's Speech in the UK. They used the talent to advertise the film. For example there was TV interviews with the director and actor Colin Firth. They also used new media to distribute and market there film in order to fit in with the changes of technology for example they had a facebook and twitter page of the Kings Speech. This allowed fans to have up to date information and news on the film.
Other production practices are very important in the making of a good film in order to reach the audience a make be a commercial and critical success. For example Warners Bros turned Sherlock Holmes from a British story to an American action film. The script is based on the original story and relevent to a new generation. This reflects how important production pratics are in order for Warners Bros to create Sherlock Holmes to attract the target audiences attention.
Bedlam productions found that the production of the King's Speech is very important in order for them to be able to create a successful film. They based their film on a true story which links in with traditional royal British life. One production pratics that they found was very important was the ending. They wrote the ending so that it would match the actual events instead of having a hollywood ending. Successful film production companies depend on good product pratics in order to create a good film that is successful amoung it's target audience.
Motion pictures decided to fast tract the production of Sherlock Holmes becasue the first film was so successful. They decided they wanted it to be a stand alone film so they could reach new audiences. Therefore Warners Bro depended on marketing and distribution in order to have a wider audience for the second film this was done throught technological convergence e.g internet, DVD and cinema.
Hollywood production companies dominate the film industry, this makes it much harder for British films to be successful. However Bedlam have shown that if a film depends on marketing and distribution as much as they do on good production pratics. The film will be successful and the King's Speech is an example of this.
The production of a film is very important, however successful media products depend as much on marketing and distribution as they do on good production pratics. You can have a good film but without marketing and distribution the film will not be successful because they will not reach the target audience.

'To what extend does digital distribution affect the marketing and consumption of media products?'
I have studied the production companies within a contemporary film industry that targets a British audience. These included the independent film production company Bedlam which has limited budget. I have also studied a hollywood company Warners Bros. Which is apart of a congomerate Time Warners. Within these companies I believe that digital distributions help with the success of marketing and consumption of the film. This is because it has allowed companies to meet the new needs and demands of the potential target audience in order for there films to be a success.
Digital distribution is getting the film to the audience through the forms of digital technology. Firstly I will start by talking about my chosen case study the King's Speech. This film was created by the independent film company Bedlam. The King's Speech is an example of how digital technology has made the marketing and consumption for limited budget film markers and distributors easier. Companies have been able to use digital distributions to connect with their target audience. For example when marketing the King's Speech momentun pictures completed TV interview with the director of the King's Speech and actor Colin Firth. This shows that digital distribution has a positive affect on the marketing and consumption of films, because it allows the target audience to become aware of the film.
However digital distribution can also have a negative affect on the film industry. For example the control and security over piaracy will become much harder. Digital technology makes it much easier for people to go on illeagel websites and download or watch films. This highlights the negative affect that digital distribution has on films, because people watch films before they have been released on DVD or in the cinema. On the other hand some people disagree and believe that digital distribution will decrease piracy this is because films come out much quicker and to a higher quality so less people will want to have a pirate copy.
My second chosen case study is Sherlock Holmes 2: A game of the shadows. This film was produced and distributed by the American company Warners Bros pictures. As part of there marketing they ran a campaign on Yahoo Uk. This linked to an app for smartphones which had links to watch the trailer for Sherlock Holmes and to go on there facebook and twitter pages. This illerstates how digital distibution can help with the success of marketing and consumption because the distribution companies are able to reach a wider range of audience throught the use of socaial networking.
Social networking narrows the gap between the marketing and consumption of independent and hollywood films. This is a cheap and easy way to keep the target audience updated with information about the film. For example the target audience for the King's Speech can go on the Youtube page to view the tailer or go on their website to find out the latest news on the film. Therefore digital distribution can have a positive impacct on the marketing and consumption of film.
However with the use of digital distribution will the cinema survie with the cahnges in technology. Because technology and consumption of film has become so advance. People may no longer want to go to the cinema to see films. The use of senergy such as release of DVDs come out not long after the film has been in the cinema. This highlights how digital technology can have an affect on the consumption of the film becasue less money can be made in the cinema.
Overall, I believe that digital distribution will help with the success of the marketing and consumption. Because technology has developed over time it made it easier for film companies to be able to connect with their audience. For example throught social networking. I believe it will also have a positive affect on the future of British Films as digital distribution allows independent companies to market their films easier.
