Film makers believe that this film with be a great hit in America because they would have not heard a story like Arthur Christmas before. The British film council is an council that provides the film industry with money to help create new films. This money comes for the national lottery funds, it started in 2000 and has helped fund over 900 films in england. Film Industry Homework
Film Industry on Prezi
'What is wrong with the British film industry?'
The British film industry is not as successful as British people would like it to be. 'I've been around on the fringes of British film for 30 years now, all that time people have been saying that the industry is in crisis.' When people think of the film industry the first thing that comes to mind is Hollywood. However the British film industry does not follow the same high standards. This is because Britain does not have the same high-budget and resources as hollywood. Many people believe that a British film need to be shot in Britain however many films are shot abroad. People believe British films films should be about British lives and culture. But people in the film industry do not believe that these types of films are worth while investments. The stories told in British films tend to be similar to other British films rather than having an original idea and story to have in a film. The audience are losing interest in watching films that simply copy their ideas from other films. Many films are not filmed and put together in Britain because there is better studios and equipment overseas. However while I will be focusing on the negatives there are many positive parts of the british film industry for example we have many talent british actors and creative story writers so the future of the film industry could be looking bright. But the british film industry is not as successful as places like Hollywood for example America work on there marketing a lot more than the british film industry and some british films are shown in America first to see if it is successful. Normally if a film is successful in America it is successful in Britain. The British film industry have little funding which puts film makers at a disadvantage when they start making a film. There is great competition in the film industry with places such as hollywood because they have more funding they are able to hire more famous actors and actress and have better equipment to put films together. There are many english actors who want to make it big in America and therefore go to Hollywood. This means that there British film industry does not have as many good actors as hollywood. To conclude there are many factors of the British film industry that are weak and need improvement such as needing more funding to create better and higher quality films. But however there are many talented and creative people who work in the British film industry which could help to make it better.
Film Production
The study of the film industry requires a focus on basic aspects of the working of:
Distribution - the role of distributor
The role of the distributor is to bring the film in to the market place. Look at the movie and decide who will want to see the film and how to advertise that. Repersentive of the studio , try and get people go and see it? What is the unique selling point of the film? What genre is the film? How is the film different from other films. Core audience three groups adults, teenagers and families. Needs to attract as many people to go and see the film to make profit. Has to think about when the best time to release a film. e.g. childrens film - school holidays some films are made with a release date in mind. Other similar films can be released near a film release date. You need to make your film stand out more in the market place. Research to make sure the film is meeting peoples expectations. Type of research - people watch the film and fill in questionaire. You have to make an estimate on how much money the film will make in order to work out how much to spend.
Distribution - The campaign
The marketing campaign needs to stand out from other films released at the same time. Gives the potential audience information.Unique look that identifies the film for example the spider man title. The poster sells the context gener of the film. Usally the first thing people see. The poster is able to show a wider audience. The publics only clip of the film before they see it in the cinema. The teaser trialer before the film comes out. The main trailer a short and a short verison of the main trailer these are shown in cinemas to let people know the film in out. Drama/comedy - voice over tiller - captions.
Forgein langage films - advertise it without sub titles so the audeience are not putt off seeing the film. 3 important things in aTV spot - many on 30 seconds. Who is in the film, when it is out and the title.
Internet is a good way of marketing seeing a film in a review.Track how effective the campaign is. Look at how figures such as how many people are aware of a film. word of mouth if they think it will be they will have an advance screening. Opening weekend 3 day opening friday saturday and sunday.

Discuss the issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in you chosen media area – Film.
There are many issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in the film industry. I will look at the different film companies based in America and Britain and look at the differences in how they have been made and what the issues are able the production and exchange of the film.
The Kings speech for example is a British film based on a true historical British story, the distributors for the Kings speech was the Weinstein Company which is an American company. Many great films that are Produced and distributed by American companies are based on English culture and stories. The king’s speech was produced in London the company called Bedlam. The Kings speech was a very successful film which was good for the British film industry as there are many downfalls within the British film industry. However unlike American films the Kings speech was made on a lower budget of £8 million. The Kings speech got the funding from the British Film council however now British film will have to get there funding from elsewhere as they have closed down. This is another downfall in the British film industry. English films have less funding than American films but it is still possible to make a great film on a lower budget as the Kings speech as about to win Oscars. The film was produced in London and the set and location of the film was very important to make the historical atmosphere. The film was then distributed to the potential target audience which was adults and teenagers. As a part of their marketing campaign just like many films they used posters to attract the target audience and give them information about the film. The audience can see from the posters the historical language and settings and this sets the theme for the films. The film exhibition was very successful it was very popluar amoung the target audience and film critics. The kings speech won several awards to back this up and helped improve the British film industry. The film was distributed in the UK 6th september 2010 at the Telluride film festival and 7th January 2011 in the UK cinemas.
Sherlock Holmes is again another successful film which is based on an English historical story. However unlike the king’s speech Sherlock Holmes was produced by the American film company Warner Bro. Being a made by an American film company was a great advantage for Sherlock Holmes as they were able to have a much higher budget than the King’s speech because there are more funding available for films in American. The reason for this is because people in the film industry do not see British productions as worthwhile investments. Sherlock Holmes had a budget of $90 million. This gave the film more opportunities to create a good film that will be successful in the cinema with their target audience. To market their film to the target audience which would be people who like action and adventure based films, they used similar marketing campaign as the Kings Speech. For example they used a trailer which would have been shown before the film is out in the cinema and while the film in out in the cinema to let the target audience know about the film. The trailer would need to include important information such as who is in the film, what the film is about and what the film in called. The advantages of using an American film company in production is that they think about their marketing while they make the film in order for it to be best possible, however English films tend to leave the marketing to the end once they have made the film. The film was distributed to the UK 18th december 2011 and 10th december 2011 in the US.
There are many issues raised by media ownership in the production and exchange of media texts in the film industry for example it is harder for English films to find funding than America and American films have much better marketing campaign.
Slumdog Millionaire
Discuss the ways in which media products are produced and distributed to audiences, within a media area you have studied.
The production and distribution of a film is very important to make a film successful. It needs to be film and put together well and also sold to the right audience. People need to know about the film and a film needs to stand out for people to want to go and see it.
The production of any film is very important is the making of the film. Slumdog millionaire was produced by the production companies Celador Films and Film 4. Before the film was made, the writer completed detailed research in to the type of story he wanted to create this included looking into news articles about Mumbi and the children who live in the slums. This is why the film was very successful as it was able to come across like it was a true story. The film uses the worldwide TV show ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ this was a very important part of the production as it tells the story to the audience. There is a story behind each of the answers to the questions and why the character knows the answer. The film production uses flashbacks during this to tell the story to the audience.
When writing the script the writer spent alot of time researching to make the script like a true story, it was then very important to chose a cast which can play the parts well. The casting stage of the production was very important as to make a good film you need the right actors to play the parts. Some of the children actors in the film lived in the slums in Mumbi. Once the production company had chosen the actors, they then began to make the film. The film was based in Mumbi slums and also filmed there, this is very important to the audience as it creates the atomosphere and settings for the film. This also adds to the film being like a true story. When producing the film, Slumdog Millionaire looked took inspiration from Indian cinema. For example there start of the film is based on a scene in the Bollywood film Black Friday.
The distribution of any film is very important is this letting the audience know about the film. The two companies that distributed Slumdog Millionaire where Fox search light and Parthe. The distribution companies decided to release Slumdog Millionaire in America first. This is because if a film is successful in America it is highly lightly to be successful in the United Kingdom. The companies used marketing campaigns in order to advertise the film to the target audience. There was a wide range of different ways this was done. First of all there was trailers which gave potential target audience a short clip of the film. This is very important as it gives the audiences an insight to what the film is about.
The distribution companies that distributed slumdog millionaire where Pathe which is an UK company, Fox and Warners Bros which are american companys. The showed the film at a number of film festives to people in the industry before showing it's release in the cinema. There were three major film festivals that slumdog millionaire was shown in and these include Telluride film festival, Toronto International film festival and London film festive. This is important as it people in the film industry were about to see the film and they could write reviews on the film which would encourage people to go and see the film. This also creates word of mouth advertisement for the film. It was then later released 12th November 2008 in the US and 9th January 2010 in the UK.
Finally production and distribution is very important for Slumdog Millionaire as it makes people aware of the film and the production is important in making a idea and story successful when made in to a film.
