Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the repersentation of ethnicty.
Hotel Babylon is trying to make the viewers feel sympathy towards the immirgrants and is highlighting that they get treated badly by the immirgration officers.
There is a close-up fixed position shot of the receptionist when the police and immirgation officers walk in. We can see by her facial expression that she is nervous about what they are going to say and do. When one of the immirgant is cleaning there is a selective focus shot of him to draw the audiences attention to what is about to happen. They also zoom in to show a medium close-up so the audience can see the fear in his facial expression. There are some shots in Hotel Babylon when there is a big close up of some bars which creates a tense atmosphere, because it reflects that the immirgrants could go to prison.
The fast editing movement between each shot reflects signs of panic, the hotel emplyees want to get all the stuff who are immirgrants together so they can hide. There are changes between places to show the atmosphere in different parts of the hotel. Between each shot there is a straight cut which is symbolic of the panic and fast movement of the actors.
The music when the immirgrantion officers walk in to the hotel creates tension for the audience. The music lowers when the immirgration officer is talking to repersent that what he is saying is important. His voice is very serious which reflects he has no sympathy for the immirgrants. Throughout the music is fast which repersent the panic feelings of the stuff at the hotel. But at the end the music is slow which create sympathy towards the immirgrant that got caught and taken away.
The immirgrantion officer is wearing a smart suit that shows that he takes his job very seriously and is not prepared to feel sorry for the immirgrants. At the beginning there are people running around the hotel and this shows the panic and worried atmosphere. When the immirgrants are in the small room they are closed in which reflects that at that moment in time there is no way out other than facing immirgation. Some of the immirgrants are wearing red which highlights signs of danger. At the end of the clip people of different ethnicity groups are sitting together this could be to show that people should be together regardless of their ethnicity.
Cutting it extract
The cutting it extract is a short clip based on the representational issue of relationships. There are two main people in the clip a husband and a wife who have gone to the hospital to collect the wife’s results.
Camera
The first camera shot is of the couple in the taxi together. However each shot is a medium close up of each character on their own. This highlights that they will soon be apart because of the wives death. There is a close shot of them holding hands and the audience can see their wedding rings which higlights that tey have a close relationship. When the wife is in the hospital room collecting her results there is a birds eye view of her. This could represent that she will soon be looking down on her husband from heaven. This creates a sympathic feeling towards the audience as they know something negative will shortly happen. The camera then goes to an outside shot where the man is sitting at the café. There is a medium close up shot of his facewhere the audience can see that he is very worried and nervous about his wives results. There is then an extreme close up of his ring which forshadows they are going to be apart. This also repersents the love they have for each other. There is a medium long shot of the woman walking across the road as she leaves the hospital. This shows the distance they now have.
Mise en scene.
At the beginning of the shot the scene is set in a taxi. The audience can see they are in a busy city location through the urban traffic, the audience can see this though the window of the taxi. When they get out of the taxi the audience can see an ambulance drive past this symoblics that a tragic event is going to occur. The rings are an important part of the clip, they can shown a number of times to highlight the importance of their love and marriage. The couple are smartly dressed this could be shown because they have a high status and class in society. The darkness in the consulting room has negative connitations, however when she leaves the hospital to go outside it is light to show that she has had positive results. When the car hit the women there is a close up shot of her husband face. The audience can see his stocked facial expression is build tension for the audience. When she is laying on the floor outside of the hospital she is surrounded by flowers which highlights that she has died as this is normally something you have at a funeral.
Sound
Their voices at the beginning of the clip are low tone and soft this symbolics the caring relationship they both share. There is no music playing during the taxi jurney. This is because the audience can focus on what the couple are saying. This highlights the importants in their speech as this is the last conversation the couple will have. When the women walks in to the hospital there is music playing in the background. This makes the audience think about what the outcome could be from the hospital appointment. When the women comes out of the hospital she shouts out to her husband in a relieved voice ‘guess what’ this repersents that she has been given good news. At the end of the clip when the couple are laying down on the road side there is music playing to end the clip and highlight the negative news of the woman’s death.
Editing
In the taxi there is slow editing shot to reflect the importance of their relationship in the clip. The shot becomes quicker as they talk about the past. This could show the audience that they have out the past behind them and forgiven each other. Again this shows the importance of their relationship. The taxi stops outside of the hospital the husband was not expecting to go there. This is when the accident later happens. When the woman leaves the hospital and stands on the pavement, there is cross cutting between each character during their conversation. This creates tension for the audience because they can see the busy urban traffic going past. Near the end of the clip there is slow motion, where we can see the mans shock reaction on his face and as he runs over to his wife. No one else goes to help his wife which symbolics that there is nothing anyone can do as she has died.
This clip symbolics the representational issue of relationships. Relationship is very important in this clip. The audience are always being reminded of their relationship thoughout the clip. For example there are a number of close up of their wedding rings.
Grayson Returns
Grayson Returns
Emmerdale is reflecting the theme of family and relationships in the clip Grayson’s return. Grayson has gone to the King’s household with a gun to try and find his son. Grayson is prepared to use violence in order to get his son back. When watching the clip the audience will see the conflict between Grayson and the other characters.
From the begnning of the clip we can identify the representational issue of family and relationship. There is a medium shot at the beginning of Carl and Jumming before they enter the kitchen. As soon as Jimmy hears the shouting he says he is going to call the police. The camera is focused on Cal and Grayson when Grayson says Carl is a ‘Failure of a father.’ The audience then assum that Carl is strerotyped as a bad father. Marxist would believe that Curl is not performing his role of a father which does not meet the needs of a capitalist society.
There is a zoomed in close up of both Carl and Grayson during their conversation before Carl got shot. This makes the audience focus on Carl and Grayson, it also allows them to think about what is going to happen next. After Carl had been shot the camera moved quickly between each of the characters faces. This was so the audience can see each of the characters facial expression. The characters all looked angry and worried about Carl. At the end of the clip there is a zoomed shot of Katie with a police car in the background this is symbolic as it highlights that Grayson is going to get punished for what he has done.
Thoughout the clip there is a lot of shouting between characters, this reflects the negative relationship that the characters have with Grayson. There is a loud gun noise when Grayson shots Carl. This repersents the harsh reality of the gun and Graysons actions. At the end of the clip the audience can hear the siron from the police car, This shows that the situation has come to an end as Grayson is going to get taken away by the police.
The scene has been set in the kings kitchen during the day time We can see this as there is light in the clip so the audience can see everything that is going on. The kitchen is a large space so the characteres are able to move around easily. The gun is an important prop in the scene, each of the characters hold the gun and this shows at the moment in time they were in control because they had a dangous weapon which they could use to harm one of the other characters. Grayson was the person who brought the gun and used it against Carl. This highlights the negative relationship that Grayson has with the other characters. Once Carl has been shot he is laying on the floor bleeding. Blood symbloises the danger and harm that Grayson has caused. This could be a threat to the other characters as he is prepared to use a gun in order to find his son.
Grayson returns repersents the weak relationship that the characters have with Grayson. Violence is used as a symbol of Grayson anger towards the Kings brothers and Katie.
Waterloo Road
Waterloo Road is a BBC drama which is based on teenage life in secondary school. It deals with issues which relate to teenagers and education. The short scene that I have studied deals with the representational issue of drugs, the scene is called Amy brings drugs into school.
There is a high angle crane shot to begin the scene over the girl’s toilets. This makes the audience realise that the scene will be between a group of girls, the writing on the toilet walls creates a school atmosphere. There is drum music playing in the background this could reflect the relax atmosphere that there is at school. Before we can see the girls we can hear them talking, one of the girls questions ‘is it strong then?’ this is the first signs the audience have of the theme of drugs. The camera then zooms in to a close up of the girls faces the camera moves between both of the girls as they are talking so the audience can focus on the one who is talking. Amy is very confident when she is talking about the drugs, this could be because she also wants Lauren to take the drugs. Lauren seems unconfident in the audience can see this by her facial expression and her voice. She is questioning Amy about the drugs this shows that she is unsure at first weather she wants to take the drugs.
Sam shouts in a shocked tone of voice ‘what are you playing at Lauren?’ The rhetorical question implies that Sam has an anti drug attitude, Sam is looking over the toilet wall this is a low angle shot, the expression on Sam’s face signifies that she does not agree with what her friend is doing. Amy was annoyed as she said Sam nearly made her drop the drugs down the toilet this represents the value that some teenagers have on drugs. The sharp tone in Sam’s voice as she is talking to Lauren establishes that she knows that drugs are harmful and does not want her friend to take drugs because they have a negative effect on people. The music stops, this could connote that Sam has an important role in the scene by trying to make her friend see the mistake that she will make. There is an over the shoulder shot between the three characters as they are talking. Sam questions Lauren to find out why she wants to take the drugs, she is doing this because Lauren is her friend can she doesn’t want her to take drugs. Sam leaves by saying she will not hang around with her friend if she takes drugs, this is important as it shows the negative effect that drugs can have.
The scene highlights school based issues that take place in secondary schools today. The TV drama waterloo road has shown two different points of view in the scene to show both sides of the issues to help the audience understand it.
Skins
Skins is a series that is shown on channel four it is about youth culture and the attitudes and the way youths behave. The extract has been taken from the third episode in series one the extract begins at the beginning of the show and last for five minutes. The main character in this extract is Jal she is preparing for the Young Musician of the Year competition at school.
The extract begins with a plain black screen for a couple of seconds, although the audience cannot see anything they can hear the music from the students in the school orchestra playing. This edit this important as it is the establishing shot of the clip and creates meaning for the audience as they know the clip will be based on music. Once the extract starts the audience can see that there has been a normal lens type used, this has been used to create reality in the clip. The director leads the camera straight to an extreme close up of Jal’s face; this is symbolic as it leads to the audience attention to focus on Jal and the audience are able to recognise that Jal is the main character in this clip. Jal starts playing the clarinet amazingly and produces a significant performance, this creates the representational issue of youth culture as it shows the talent that youths can have if they work hard. There is a zoom out that which leads to a crane shot where the audience can see the whole orchestra and the teacher from a high angle. This the school atomosphere and the youth culture that will be displayed during the clip. Jal is wearing a red cardigan which can represent that she has a passion for music, she is also wearing a purple top, purple is a colour that has connotations of royalty this would catch the audience’s attention and represent that Jal talent is an important part of her role in the school orchestra. The (female) music teacher is shouting and swearing as the orchestra are playing this highlight that she is very stressed and anxious about the orchestra’s performance. Parents would not approve of the teacher swearing as teachers are meant to be a good role model to students.
There is a shot reverse shot between the teacher and the students in the orchestra when they are playing, this is so the audience are able to see what the orchestra are doing and focus on the teacher when she is talking. The shot reverse shot shows the negative attitude that the teacher has with the student as is it uncomfident about their performace and you can see this by her facial expression and the swearing. Once the orchestra have finished Jal stays behind with the teacher to practise for the Young Musician of the Year competition. A medium close up shot has been used when the teacher is talking to Jal telling her she can ‘win the competition if she pulls it off’. This creates meaning as it repersents the high expectations that the teacher has for the student and believes that she can do well. When another (male) member of stuff walks in to the hall the 180 degree rule has been used. This editing has been used to build tension as the audience want to find out what the teacher has come to say. Once the two teachers start talking there is an over the shoulder shot this type of editing is normally used in conversations it builds tension because the teacher is complaining about the swearing that has been used in the orchestra. The music teacher blames the swearing on the students which highlights the negative attitude that has been created about youth culture. There is a medium shot of both the music teacher and Jal as she tells the other member of staff that Jal is the Young Musician of the Year finalist the next shot then focuses on the member of staff as he congratulates Jal, his tone in voice changed to shocked, this highlights that he did not expect Jal to achieve Young Musician of the Year finialist, this brings up the representational issue of youth culture and how some people have lack of confident in young peoples talents and achievements.
Once Jal starts playing the clarinet, the audience recognise that the teacher is very pleased with Jal through her facial expression as she has a big smile on her face. This could show that she is confident that Jal will do well in the competition because of her talent. The clarinet is an important prop in this extract because it is a part of Jal identity of being a excellent musican. The sound of the clarinet is soft to create a warm atmosphere for the audience who are watching. This could reflect Jal’s personality. There is then a cut transition to the next shot which is an extreme close up of a teenage couple kissing, this then is zoomed out and the audience can see the girl is wearing red, this colour has been used to highlight the theme of romance. This again highlights youth culture. There is sound in the background of a televison that Jal is watching, this brings the audiences attention to Jal and the importance of her in the extract. Jal tries to get her friends attention and she does not receive this we can hear by the tone of voice that she feels let down by her friends, because they are suppost to be going shopping for a new dress for Jal Young Musican of the Year competition. This repersents the importants of the competition to Jal. Jal is wearing blue and the cusions and blanket on the sofa that Jal is sitting on are also blue this highlights the soft personality that Jal has.
As Jal goes to leave the house the door bell rings there is a medium close up shot as Jal answers the door and it is Sid asking if tony is in. They both have a conversation about Sid and how all he does is hang around with tony. This is a shot reverse shot. It could highlight that Sid might not have any other friends. There is then a moving shot as Jal walks out of the house and tells Sid they are going shopping. The audience can tell that Jal is disappointed that she is having to go shopping with Sid but the tone of her voice when she says ‘well you will have to do.’ Jal says this with an attidued this also repersents youth culture. As Sid shuts the front do he said ‘I’ll have you do’ his facial expression shows that he knows that Jal would rather go shopping with someone else.
The extract is very good at showing the reperentational issues of youth culture, the audience learn a lot about the youth culture when watching the clip. Such as young people can be very talented and can achieve their goals if they work hard such as Jal achieving the Young Musicaian of the Year finalist. There are a wide varity of technical features in this clip which helps show the reperentational issure of youth culture.
To begin the clip is set on a farm with people working. The opening shot is a view of a lake which creates a calm atomsphere. Amy then walks out of the house and there is an over the shoulder shot of her and the boy during their conversation. Amy says 'I need to talk to you about something.' This engages the audeinces attention and builds tenison as they want to know what is going to happen next. There is non - digetic music to show the simple lifestyle they have. This could reinfources the idea that amy wants to leave education at a young age to have a simple life. Amy tries to act older than she is by saying she can drive when paul ask her if she can go in to town. This is a focus close up shot of Amy in the car. The audience can see by her facial expression that she is nevous. This forshadows the idea that Amy is not old enough to take on adult reponsiablity. There is a bang when Amy has a car crash. This noise makes the other characters panic about amy and they go running to find her. The car crash supports the argument that Amy id too imature to live an adult life and she should be focusing on her school work. Amy;s headmaster from her schools gets out of his car an explains that Amy as run away and that she is only 16 years old. The other character have shocked tone of voice when they realise that Amy is only 16 years old. The headmaster and paul walk into a room. The 80 degree rule has been used during this shot and Amy is not present. This highlights that Amy is not old enought to make important decisions as she as gone against the norms and vaules of society by leaving schools without doing her exams. When paul leaves the room to talk to Amy his tone of voice changes with her to show that he is angry because she has run away and left school. When he is talking to her he is looking down on her this highlights the differences between age. Because he is older than her and he has more power. The camera then buts to an outside sence with non-digetic music where the audience can see people working. All of these people are older than amy and this highlight the issue of age. Amy walks into her bedroom and there is a shot of her bed where we can see girls magazines. There is then a panning shot where the camera has a close up view of the teddy bear. These things show that amy is still a child. A woman walks into amys room to find that she has run away again. This could highlight that amy wants to grow up and take responiablity. She could be going back to school so she can do her exams. The repersentational issue of age is presented in a varity of ways thought the clip. This clip highlights thir is difference between different ages for example the older people wore formal wear and the younger people wore casual wear. The editing going on thought the clip to highlight the issue of age. For example there was cuts between each shot and cross cutting between each convercation so the audience can foucs on the characteres who is talking.
Primeval
There is non-diegetic music playing in the background. The audience can then hear a sound of a trailer. This then leads us in to a zoomed in shot of a woman driving a trailer. This rejects the stereotypical view of women because this task is seen as a man’s role. We can then see that she is wearing a black leather jacket and a short males style haircut. This highlights the powerful role that she plays. However it is normally male characters in television dramas that have the powerful roles.
The man is in the pit and there is a fast shot between the hand he finds and this reaction. This then leads to a medium close up shot of the man and the audience can see his shocked facial expression. He shouts to Abbie to stop the trailer. There is silence for a couple of seconds. Then you can hear from the background the tiger. There is a fast panning shot just before the tiger enters the frame this could show the panic that the characters would have felt. A tracking shot is then shown to represent that the tiger is running up to the pit. Once the tiger is at the pit there is a point of view shot as the tiger is looking down in to the pit. This represents that the man has no power or control over the tiger. Abbie is then taking control of the situation however the man is in the pit looking scared. This symbolics that the gender stereotypical soles have been reversed.
The man runs away which results in the tiger following him. There is fast continuous editing at this point to make it look realistic to the audience. There is a point of view shot as he walks up to the tree. Once he get to the other side we can see Abbie from a distance with a gun. The audience can then hear a loud gun shot as she shots the tiger. The editing between each shot then slows down to symbolic that the danger and panic is over. Once again Abbie has taken control of the situation, which highlights the powerful unusual role that she plays as it is normally the men who protect women in television dramas.
There is no music playing when each of the characters talk about the body they have found. This could highlight the importance of their conversation. There is then a straight cut to a new setting in the barn. There is a lady wearing formal clothing and uses formal language this could represent that she is high up in society. She let Mr west know that she is going to tell the police that he had the tiger. This highlights the power and control that she has. This is because she uses threat in order to try and get want she wants her high social class status could also help her to do this. Mr west then picks up a gun and points it at the women. This is an important prop in the scence as it shows he knows he has power. This is then shown again by the non-diegetic sound of the gun shot. Abbie goes to help the woman which highlights that the man does not scare her and she is able to take control of the situation.
This extract highlights the representational issue of gender. It shows the audience that women can have power as well as men. The music and editing through the clip highlights who has power at that time.
Hustle
The extract is set in a very expensive women’s clothes shop. The establishing shot is of a woman walking up the stairs in to the shop. The camera leads the audience to a medium shot of the owner who is male and a customer who is female. There is an over the shoulder shot as they are talking about a dress. The representational issue of gender is presented here as the owner talks to the lady with no respect when he releases she does not have the money to buy the dress. As the owner talks to the women he is looking down on her with highlights again that he has no respect for her. The other women is in the background looking for at the dresses and the audience can see that she is listening to the conversation.
As the women leaves the shop the owner goes to ask the other customer if she needs any help. But before he does this there is a close up shot of the woman’s rings, this highlights to the audience that the ring is a very important prop in the extract. The ring and her smart clothing bring up the gender issue as this women is wealthy so the owner will treat her with respect as he wants hr to buy something from his shop and he knows she is likely to spend a lot of money which is will benefit from.
There is then a cut shot to another location where two men are talking about a job. Then is then a quick shot to the next shot when the location changes again and goes back to the women’s clothes shop. Once the women has said that she will buy the dress, we can see by the owners facial expression that he is very happy about this result.
However the women then relises that she has lost her ring. There is then quick non-digetic music playing in the background, this represents that panic that she feels. There is quick editing during this section as they try to find the ring. The man then suggest that he looks for the ring while she goes on her next apporitment. There is a close up when the woman says ‘I’m sure I can’ his reflects that she knows he can not be trusted. He does this too her because he knows he may get a rewards from her. This is taking advantage of the money she has. As she leaves the shop she saids eh will give £5,000 rewards to the person who finds it.
Another man then walks into the shop looking for a dress for this girlfriends birthday. There is a close up focus of the man as he walks in to the shop, this forshadows to the audience that he has an important part to play during the clip. There is a low angle shot of the owner as he is looking for the ring on the floor. The other man then goes to the floor and takes the ring out of this pocket. This shows that he as power and this is a normal connotation to men. The audience can see that the other man is now weak as he has lost his chance of getting the £5,000 reward money.
There is a long shot of both men as they talk about the ring which then leads to a medium reverse shot of them having their conversation. Just before this there was loud non-digetic music when the man finds the ring. The two men argue over the ring because of the reward money. The man with the ring then walks away explaining that the customer can call him. As he walks away the owner calls him back, as he walks back there is a close up of his face as he smiles to the camera. This again highlights the power he has over the owner of the shop. There is then a cut to a different location a café in a very busy street when the woman and man meet. The audience can then see there has been a set up.
This extract from the television drama the Hustle has represented the representational issue of gender, during the clip we can see the differences between both genders.
Finger Smith - Sexuality
Finger Smith relates to the issues of sexuality. It's a TV drama that is set in the victorian era, during this time women had no voice and it was look down upon to be a lesbian.
The opening of this clip is a medium shot of two women standing in front of a mirror. Here the director relates to the issues of sexuality, by having in place a voice over which gives the women thoughts and feelings from her perspective. The clothing the two women are wearing relates to the victorian era and the posh voice with british accent sets the scene. The voice over is a symbolic signifer as it highlights the issue of sexuality. The director has added fade editing in to the clip which could represent that the character has not opened up about her sexuality. However it was very difficult to do this during the victorian era. During this time there is non-digetic music playing in the background which is slow and soft, the director could have put this in to place to highlight the face that the audience are meant to sympathis with this character.
The shot then fades to a shot outside where the women is painting, here the director introduces us to, two binary opposites the man and the women. The man who is that character who holds the power and we can see this from the use of editing. During the time when the women is painting there is slow non-digetic music, however once the man comes over the music gets high and slightly faster. This could highlight that the man holds the power in the situation. When the woman is painting there is a close up of red paint on the brush. This is because the colour red shows that the women has fallen in love with the other woman. This is an iconic signifer. However the colour red also has other meanings, such as a sin for her falling in love with another women. Because this was not seen as acceptable in the victorian era. There is slow past editing during this point.
The man then comes over and talks to the woman, during this time the music becomes louder to show that he holds the power. This is because aggression is being shown. The man then takes the women over to a tree and there is fast past editing during this point. When he is talking the to her there is no sound being played in the background. This illerstrates the power the man holds over the woman. He looks down upon her sexuality by saying, 'she would laugh in your face if she knew, if I told her.' The director has constructed the man as powerful, by having a shot where the man stands over the woman. The audience are positioned to empathise with the female character because her sexuality is look down upon in the clip by the binary opposites male character. The audience are also positioned to feel sorry for the character when the man and women are talking because the mans back is shown to the audience and this again highlights the power he holds. The music that is being played creates tension and this makes the audience feel symethic towards the character.
The repersentational issues in finger smith is sexuality. Because it is set in the victorian era it is hard for the woman to express and show her feelings towards the other woman. This is because her feelings would be seen as a sin.
Primeval - Gender
The Primeval clip includes the binary opposites of males and females. Micro features have been constructed into this clip to illerstrate the repersentational issues of gender. There is conflict that runs throughout this clip. There is also a mixture of power and dominace of both males and females in this clip.
The clop starts with the repersentational issues of gender. There is a long shot of a woman driving a truck. This leads to a medium shot were we are able to see a clearer pocture of the woman. She has short hair and is wearing a black leather jacket. All of these tend to be seen as more male. The man in the clip then tells the woman to 'stop.' This leads to a fast panning shot before the tiger enters. During this time there is fast and loud music to build tension for the audience. The director has constructed the woman as powerful through the use of fast editing when she is trying to control the tiger. The man then tries to regain this power by taking control of the sitiuation. There is then a fast shot as we see the man going down the rope. DUring this time there is fast music in the background which could be a sign of danger. We can also see many point of view shots from the mans perspective when he is looking down at the ground. This however shows that he has physical power. Once he gets to the end of the rope abbie is there holding a gun and she shots the tiger, during this time there is fast past editing to highlight the dangers of the tiger and that Abbie holds the power. This highlights that the clip shows un-stereotypical image which shows power of women.
The clip the changes setting to a barn with a clip that includeds two binary opposties one male and one female. There is a shot reverse shot during there conversation and we can see that the womoan is in control as she tries to blackmail the man. However the power cahnges when the man gets the gun out. The use of close up shots of the woman is motivated by the directors need to show the fear that the woman has. There is then non-digetic gun shot sounds during the shots between the man and the dogs, during this time there is fast past editing to help build a tense scene. Abbie and the men walk in to tht ebar, they are holding guns. Which shoes physical control over the situtaion. Abbie also asks if she is okay which highlights that women steretypical can dealt with emotions.
Throughtout this clip this issues of gender has been displayed throught the use of micro features which have been able to support the arguement that primeval has displayed a mixture of power and dominace between both men and women.
